Vulture funds: 203 MPs sign Early Day Motion
Thanks to your efforts, the Government and individual MPs have received many thousands of postcards and petitions. Our Early Day Motion was signed by a total of 203 MPs by the end of the parliamentary session, which has now closed. Because many MPs cannot or will not sign any EDMs, this figure signals very significant Parliamentary support for a measure on vultures. It was one of the highest totals of the many hundreds of EDMs submitted in the last year.
We are, naturally, disappointed that legislation on vultures was not announced in the Queen's Speech yesterday. However, we're not giving up on getting legislation introduced before the General Election next year.
Next week a handful of MPs will be given Parliamentary time through winning the Private Members' Ballot. A certain amount of time is allocated in each session of Parliament to Bills put forward by backbench MPs. We hope one of the MPs chosen will decide to introduce a Bill on vultures.
We further hope the Government will support such a Bill. The Treasury has not yet announced the results of its consultation on a new law, so there's definitely all to play for.
Thank you again for everything you've done to date. We have come such a long way in such a short time, and we remain really hopeful that we will see progress on this issue in the next 6 months.
